-International Events-

  1. Russian drones pound power system in Sumy region town, 14 people hurt, Ukraine says: Russian drones inflicted significant damage to the northern Ukrainian town of Konotop’s energy infrastructure in an overnight attack that injured at least 14 people and cut electricity to the settlement, local officials said on Thursday. Rescuers were working to restore power in the town, which had a pre-war population of about 83,000. Regional officials said there had been 10 explosions during the attack and Mayor Artem Semenikhin said the power system was in critical condition. (Reuters)
  2. Former Peruvian leader Alberto Fujimori dies at 86: Peru’s former President Alberto Fujimori, who was convicted of human rights abuses and corruption, has died aged 86. 1. Department of Homeland Security designates Jan. 6, 2025, a โ€˜National Special Security Eventโ€™: The federal government has designated Congressโ€™ certification of electoral votes in the upcoming 2024 presidential election to be a โ€œNational Special Security Event,โ€ the Secret Service announced Wednesday. The special designation was approved by Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and means law enforcement agencies will dramatically beef up security for the Jan. 6, 2025, tally โ€“ in an effort to prevent another riot at the Capitol Building. โ€œWhen an event is designated a National Special Security Event, the US Secret Service assumes its mandated role as the lead agency for the design and implementation of the operational security plan.โ€ (NYPost)
  2. A Venezuelan Gang Is Expanding Its Deadly Reach to the U.S.: U.S. law-enforcement officials had watched with alarm the spread of a Venezuelan gang known for dismembering rivals from Chile to Colombia. But the gang, known as the Tren de Aragua, seemed contained in Latin America. American officials fear the same pattern emerging in the U.S., where more than 700,000 Venezuelans have settled in the past four years. Tren de Aragua members are suspects in the shooting of two New York police officers, the killing of a former Venezuelan police officer in South Florida, and crimes from Chicago to Texas, law-enforcement authorities said. In all, there are now more than 100 investigations in the U.S. involving suspected members of Tren de Aragua, said a high-ranking Immigration and Customs Enforcement official. (WSJ)

  1. Central Bank Digital Currencies: Digital Currency or Digital Control?: Central bankers and other policymakers may argue that CBDCs are the future of money, but whether the end result is a waste of resources or a threat to fundamental freedoms, this future is not one that should be welcomed. Considering all signs currently seem to suggest that governments will push forward with CBDCs, it is up to the people to get involved in the conversation before the decision is made for them.
